Report of 2019’s Duver Dash
There was a fantastic turnout for our inaugural Duver Dash charity fun run event at the Harbour on 26th May 2019, which was held under cloudy skies and a brisk breeze, but happily dry conditions.
60 adults took part in the 5km event and 53 in the under 16s Junior event, whose course was on the St Helens Duver, with the kind permission of the National Trust -1km with a 2 lap option. There were 14 entrants in the under 9 category, 4 of whom were just 5 years old (the minimum age for the event), with one deciding to do the extra lap to make it the full 2km!
The picturesque 5km Course also started on the Duver, continuing along St Helens waterfront, uphill through Nodes Point Holiday Park and the grounds of Priory Bay Hotel, down to Priory Bay Beach, St Helens Beach, and back along the waterfront to the Duver and the finish at Bembridge Harbour’s Duver Marina. A varied course affording spectacular views of the Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Station, St Helens Fort and across the Solent to Portsmouth and the Spinnaker Tower. Our grateful thanks to Parkdean Resorts, Aria Resorts and Andrew Palmer for kindly allowing the 5k Course to include their private grounds.
A fabulous family atmosphere was enjoyed by all, with plenty of support, encouragement and jelly babies for the participants (and a few others!). The Duver Cafe served up hot drinks and homemade cakes, burgers were available from a BBQ, and the Nice Ice IOW vintage tricycle dished up locally made ice-cream with delicious fresh toppings.
An enormous thanks to the small army of Marshals who guided everyone safely around the courses – the event would simply not have been possible without them, plus assorted helpers including Jo and Simon from Love Running, who added their extensive experience to the team, and of course the indefatigable Gordon, who as Course Director expertly executed proceedings on the day, even leading with a few pre-start star jumps (we’ve taken the microphone away from him now ….!)
A great event and all in support of our wonderful 2019 nominated charity, the Sophie Rolf Trust – KissyPuppy for whom you helped us raise £450. THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who made the event a success by taking part or being here to support – you’re all wonderful! Fiona x
